Team Chabuk
Recon Exploration - 2008
"Go to the middle of nowhere, turn left and head a couple of more hours . . . " Sometimes it is hard to explain to people just where Chabuk is, but that description is close.
Situated on the Nepal and China (Tibet) border in the eastern Himalayas, Chabuk is beyond the middle of nowhere. There are no roads, only yak trails. The nearest village is a two-day walk away. Besides altitude and weather, the gravel, small rocks, big rocks, and boulders the size of buses are your enemy. The earth gives you every opportunity to break an ankle or worse with each step.
It figures...the name Chabuk translates to, "a long whip as used in a form of punishment." Boy, did they ever get that name right! While describing the area in 1879, an Indian Pundit wrote, "...the very picture of desolation, horror, and death, escaping the treacherous crevasses which abound in the dreadful region." In this region, man only wanders where the yaks can graze. The locals know there is no reason to go beyond that boundary. But it is that boundary, and a couple others, that Team Chabuk intends to push beyond.
At 6,792 meters high, the mountain of Chabuk has not been climbed. In keeping with Slickrock Adventures Mission, Team Chabuk intends on placing U.S. Veterans and Wounded Warriors on top of the peak. More information on this venture will be posted soon. To ensure success in the climb, a reconnaissance trip to the area was accomplished in October of 2008.
